The success of Xbox has been built upon the portfolio of core games from Microsoft Studios. The Core Games Publishing team’s charter is to partner with the best developers in the world to create the next great core franchises for this generation and future generations of Xbox.
We are looking for an experienced, proven, and highly capable game designer to partner with internal and external teams in the pursuit of highly engaging game experiences. As an evangelist for first party game design, this position is critical in the establishment and maintenance of our lead as innovators in the core game space. By focusing on the design, prototyping, integration, and refinement of innovative game mechanics, the first party game designer is a key resource in supporting our top tier AAA developers.
Success in this role will require working effectively with Publisher & Developer side Art Director, Audio Director, User Research Lead, User Experience Lead, Executive Producer, and any other key leads to determine project design specifications and to ensure successful product execution. This position involves working with external development partners to ensure that:
- The product vision is clear.
- The design relationship and communication are rock solid between publishing and development partners.
- There is strong support for prototyping risky or new ideas, empowering our developers to innovate.
- First party experience needs are clearly communicated, using methods ranging from design specs to storyboards to playable prototypes.
- The final product quality meets expectations of 1st party titles.
- The game design pushes its genre forward into new and uncharted territory and leverages the value of the platform, including Xbox LIVE and Kinect.
Required skills and experience:
- 5+ years' game design experience
- Design experience on shipped AAA console products
- Experienced relationship-management skills
- Strong technical skills and a basic understanding of programming or scripting
- Experience with common design tools & game engines (UnrealEd, CryENGINE, etc.)
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Passion for console and PC game, with excellent design insights across genres.
- Ability to produce articulate design documentation detailing innovative gameplay mechanics, character biographies, control systems, interface design, story lines and asset inventories
- Willing to accept and provide direction, work well under pressure, and handle multiple tasks
- Ability to work closely with all core development functions, as well as supporting functions
- Xbox LIVE or network game design experience
