Join Microsoft Hardware and drive state of the art user research to help us deliver innovative experiences integrating hardware, software, and services.

The Microsoft Hardware User Research team is looking for an experienced user researcher to focus on front end planning for the hardware roadmap and product platforms for computer peripheral products focusing on personal productivity, communications, gaming and entertainment. You will be working with an interdisciplinary team creating exceptional user experiences for our highly successful products.

You will be responsible for planning and implementing user research to identify opportunities to define new value propositions for integrated product experiences incorporating hardware, software and services.

You'll develop and manage research plans for diverse projects including field studies, technology, concept and prototype evaluations, quantitative studies, and basic research -- so you'll need to have command of a wide range of user research methods for answering research questions from explorative to evaluative in nature, to inform decisions ranging from product and portfolio decisions to informing platform level or longer term investments.

You need to think strategically, be creative, and be able to communicate a lot of information simply and in an organized way. You'll need to define new ways of measuring success and will need to answer challenging research questions -- so you'll need to be detail-oriented and results-driven. Most importantly, you'll need to be a passionate advocate for our users throughout the development process and demonstrate how this leads to business value.

Qualifications:
At least 3-5 years of experience in the technology consumer product industry conducting user research
Experience with a broad range of research methodology
Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary product teams to drive application of results into products.
Experience generating research plans, defining and tracking user experience metrics, coordinating work on multiple products/releases and managing the work of additional resources.
Solid knowledge of the field of human-computer interaction, experimental design, observational and field methods and data analysis is required.
Strong aptitude for learning new technologies is a must. Strong written and oral communication skills are required.
Education requirements include either an MA/MS or PhD in human factors, psychology or highly related field, OR a BA/BS in one of the above fields with significant industry experience.
Additional, hands-on experience in a secondary field such as interaction design, user interface design, industrial design, software development, or marketing, etc. is a plus.
