RESEARCHER - X box Natal Job

Date: Mar 3, 2010

Location: Redmond, WA, US

Job Category: Research
Location: United States, WA, Redmond
Job ID: 708676 9916
Division: Entertainment & Devices Division

Do people call you mad scientist, inventor, wizard, or creative? Are you passionate about research and making it a reality through product development? Do you want to create something new, something innovative, something nobody has ever thought of or seen, yet they cannot live without? Do you work best in frameless environment with lots of ambiguity?

Join the Applied Science Group and help imagine and create the future of Microsoft's consumer hardware and software businesses. In a lot of ways this is a dream job, a position that is rare at Microsoft and it demands only the top visionary and technical talent. We are looking for a very creative, broadly skilled technologist, with a talent for unconventional thinking and a track record of bringing innovative ideas to fruition.

You will collaborate as part of a team to develop solutions for Project Natal and beyond. We work closely with various Microsoft business units to map out and execute research and development plans. You should be able to wear multiple hats like engineer, business man, researcher, salesmen. We are expected to develop and own a vision that you think Microsoft should go. Our mission is to take us the rest of Microsoft there with us, all the while switching our hats where appropriate to get the job done.

This job is about delivering a uniquely sophisticated and advanced technology to a broad consumer audience. Ideally, your background would include a mixture of computer vision, machine learning, and human-computer interaction (in mild increasing importance). While proficiency in each area would be preferred, a general appreciation of the approaches and limitations in each area is very helpful. At the end of the day, project Natal is a new interface technology more than it is a computer vision application. The candidate should appreciate that this will imply a number of operational constraints on viable approaches such as performance, resource requirements, robustness, generalizability, failure behavior, and overall impact on the user experience. Often, high theoretical potential is less valuable than realizable code with acceptable/predictable limitations. As the project matures, the workloads will roughly split into two categories: addressing issues related to near term research problems and exploring application concepts that need further investigation. Existing near-term research problem areas include machine learning, human-modeling, and interaction methods. Longer term application concepts vary more widely. A willingness to work with developers closely to transition and adapt concepts into production form is important.

Graduate degrees and Research backgrounds are preferred if not required.
