Are you interested in learning how university incubations with a product development focus can help build the next generation of games and entertainment experiences that allow our customers to consume entertainment how and when they want? This is a hands-on role pioneering and developing advanced technology solutions, tools, and game features & experiences working with university partners and start-ups. This position is a rare opportunity to develop the core technology used to create a brand new form of interactive entertainment, driven through university incubations.
The Studios University team is seeking an experienced, effective, and passionate technical evangelist/program manager to drive our academic outreach activities with top game design programs in the UK and EMEA while supporting incubations with top EMEA university partners and UK Accelerator startups and our college hire program for the region. The Studios University team is partnering with top university game design programs in EMEA to help build the IP asset portfolio for the future of entertainment. A successful candidate will have the knowledge, creativity, discipline, and people skills to drive our academic outreach program to these universities in EMEA, support our recruiting activities in partnership with UK College staffing, and build relationships with key university partners and startups with critical IP to help deliver games and entertainment experiences.
You will be able to support external university partners using a mature pipeline, drive new techniques, while bringing passion and new externally sourced IP to the table. Technical acumen and self-confidence are a must, as is self-awareness. You will also engage regularly with important incubation teams around Studios, working with them to formulate and execute against a shared plan for IP generation through university and startup product development. The preferred candidate will also be approachable and able to work with closely with artists, designers, audio and video specialists in the Studios Central Media organization to understand requirements and solve problems.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Think through and come up with our EMEA university partner ecosystem engagement strategy
- Create and articulate clear technology adoption guidance and supporting value propositions to the university and startup ecosystem
- Have the opportunity to ensure our university and startup partner engagements are consistent, evolve with the product cycle, and have a level of rigor in their communication and follow up on findings
- Ensure the UK technical advisory board and UK studios leadership team is having the right conversations, at the right time and with the right people
- You will do this all through your ability to forge deep university engagements with top EMEA game design/entertainment technology arts programs and make insightful recommendations about college recruitment and IP generating activities
- Able to get up to speed quickly on existing product development projects already in production
- Collaborate with designers, artists, and other programmers from universities and startups to deliver new experiences, tools, and features
- Support Studios HR with a positive on-boarding program for interns and college hires
- Partner with other group leaders to understand and work towards long term goals that help ensure our university talent needs and business needs are synchronized
- Meet with other internal studios to educate them about college hire program and promote transparency at a team level, department level and studio level within the organization
- Consult on a regular basis with Studios Central Services leadership to align expectations and deliverables from university incubation projects
- Excel at cross-functional collaboration and leadership
- Multi-task between projects and teams fluidly
- Be perceived as a strong resource on Xbox 360, SmartGlass, Interactive TV, and Kinect for Windows related issues
- Effectively identify and prioritize key features of game product, delivering high quality gameplay from concept through ship
- Balancing and resolving conflicts between quality, schedule, resources, and market needs
- Delivering quality games IP within tight schedules & budgets via university incubation and startups
- Travel 20-25%
Qualifications
The successful candidate’s background is likely grounded with deep understanding of the technical investments shaping the future of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment strategy (including deep understanding in current technologies), an awareness of the challenges in growing our university and startups ecosystem in EMEA and an ability to listen and build relationships effectively. You will have experience working directly with university research faculty driving adoption of both nascent and established technologies. You will be capable of setting a clear strategy, building comprehensive adoption plans, securing university partner commitments, and delivering concrete ecosystem results with the highest impact on our college hiring and university/startup incubations.
You’ll really shine in this position if you are creative yet detailed in your thinking, passionate about engaging externally with a diverse set of universities and startups, and an excellent communicator. Your skills will include:
- Experience in the games industry and or university relations with computer science departments
- Prefer candidates who have professional experience working in or with academic institutions (e.g. graduate teaching assistant in an HCI, game development, or Art and Animation program at a recognized academic institution, guest or adjunct lecturer at a university or other academic outreach program)
- Excellent standard of educational achievement is required. Prefer candidates with BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering, Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) or related interdisciplinary field.
- Seeking candidates who have a demonstrated track record of self-initiated outreach projects and critical thinking skills including managing a program budget.
